Alumni Notes: Winter 2013

1960s

James L. (Jim) Allen, ’69, in May received the Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Wyoming’s College of Arts and Sciences, where he received a doctoral degree. He is chairman of J.L. Allen Exploration Ventures, an oil and gas exploration company in the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana.

William T. Betz, ’69, was honored with the Distinguished Fellows Award by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians during the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine’s 2013 Annual Convention and Scientific Seminars in Las Vegas. Betz, one of seven ACOFP members who received the distinction, is the senior associate dean for osteopathic education and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Pikeville. The award recognizes exceptional members of the Conclave of Fellows who have shown exemplary contributions to ACOFP governance and committees, as well as consistent attendance at state and national ACOFP meetings. The award is conferred on founder and active members after review and approval by the Executive Council of Conclave of Fellows and by a majority vote of the ACOFP Board of Governors.

1970s

Teri (Walsh) Cullen, ’BA 78, MASL ’01, is the principal at St. Dominic School in Benicia, Calif.

Jeline (Kelsey) Harclerode, ’73, has retired from the Emporia school district, where she taught for 28 years. She received an Emporia Master Teacher Award in 2009 and Kansas Master Teacher Award, and in 2010 she traveled the state as a member of the Kansas Teacher of the Year team. She was inducted into Baker’s School of Education Wall of Honor in 2009.

1990s

Christie (Apgar) Bagley, BS ’93, is a chemist for the County of Kauai in Linhue, Hawaii.

Jennifer Kimble Esch, BS ’93, is a customer service specialist for Bach Medical Supply. She and her husband, Brent, are foster parents to Jacob, 4, and Lilly, 9 months.

Kent Galley, BS ’93, is chief operating officer of Ticket Solutions, Earned Rewards Cash, VeriProcess and VeriShip. Galley was named as Kansas City Business Journal’s 2011 CFO of the Year in the small-company category for his work at Saepio Technologies Inc.

Matt Johnson, BS ’93, MAEd ’99, is the director of student services and athletics for the Shawnee Mission (Kan.) School District.

Aaron Todd, BS ’93, is an assistant principal and activities director at Spring Hill (Kan.) Middle School.

2000s

Andy Bertapelle, BSN ’00, is the director of nursing at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital in Barrow, Alaska, the northern-most city in the United States. He previously was the director of patient care for two 20-bed inpatient units at a Level 1 trauma center in Denver. After graduating from Baker, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and was sent to a smaller hospital at the U.S. Naval base in Rota, Spain.

Emily Bogue, MAEd ’05, teaches world history at Hoxie (Kan.) High School and seventh-grade and eighth-grade science and social studies. She has been teaching for 11 years.

Lisa Carlsten, AAB ’03, BBA ’05, MBA ’09, is a retail accounting/IT specialist at Peruvian Connection in Tonganoxie, Kan.

Dustin Dooley, MASL ’08, is the middle/high school principal for Solomon (Kan.) USD 393.

Evan Funk, MBA ’07, is a vice-president commercial relationship manager at Fidelity Bank in Wichita, Kan.

Ann Gandhi, BSN ’05, and Mike Koss were married on Jan. 6, 2013, on St. Maarten Island. She is employed at St. John OB-GYN in Leavenworth. The couple resides in Lawrence, Kan.

David Gaston, BS ’08, co-owns Experience Fitness in Overland Park, Kan. He was recently recognized as Ingram’s 2013 “Class of 20 in Their Twenties.”

Aaron Heckman, BS ’02, is the director of the Montgomery County Action Council, an economic development and industrial business recruitment organization.

John Hill, BA ’03, is the head baseball coach at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College.

Melissa Holloman, MLA ’00, recently retired form Royal Valley High School in Hoyt, Kan., where she taught for 13 years. She most recently taught senior-level English and at-risk reading. She previously taught French, Spanish and freshman and junior English for 10 years at Northern Hills Junior High School and Seaman High School in Topeka, Kan. She also taught six years of French and sophomore English at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka and one year of French and Spanish at Eisenhower Middle School in USD 501 in Topeka.

Meagan (Crough) Meneley, BA ’00, MAEd ’08, was named Abilene Teacher of the Year. She teaches German.

Jenalea Myers, BS ’08, is a manager of multimedia and special projects for the Franklin County (Kan.) Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Nikki (DeSimone) Pauls, BA ’03, is an adoption social worker. She married Brian Pauls on April 28, 2012. They live in Prairie Village, Kan.

Tanner Purdum, BS ’07, MAEd ’09, has re-signed with the New York Jets. He is entering his fourth season as a long snapper with the Jets.

Joe Sample, BA ’08, MASL ’12, is the principal at Baldwin (Kan.) Junior High School. He previously taught Kansas history to seventh-graders at Wheatridge Middle School in Gardner, Kan.

State Rep. Clark Shultz, MBA ’00, of McPherson, Kan., has been appointed to fill an unexpired term on the Kansas State Use Law Committee. Shultz has served in the Kansas State House of Representatives since 1997.

Tammy Thomasson, EdD ’08, is the principal of Wellsville (Kan.) Middle School. She previously was the principal of Baldwin (Kan.) Junior High School.

2010s

Ron Barry, MSSL ’12, is the school’s assistant principal and activities and athletics director for Valley Center (Kan.) High School.

Mason Bruza, BS ’13, was honored as a newly commissioned officer of the Air Force on May 20.

Elizabeth Edds, MLA ’12, is an administrative assistant in the Dean’s Office of Student Affairs in the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin.

Leosha Giardina, MSSL ’13, is an instructional coach at Lowman Hill Elementary School in Topeka, Kan.

Trisha (Dietz) Haskell, BSN ’12, is a registered nurse and works in the cardiac progress unit at Hays (Kan.) Medical Center.

Todd Junker, MAEd ’13, was named the recipient of the Wichita (Kan.) Public Schools 2013 Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award. Junker is a physical education instructor at Christa McAuliffe Academy.

Patrick Mirch, BS ’12, is a producer for Channel 6 News in Lawrence, Kan.

David Muhammad, MAEd ’12, was named 2013 Outstanding Alumnus by Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College. He teaches U.S. history and economics at Shawnee Mission East (Kan.) High School.

Corina Ouellette, MSSL ’10, is the special education coordinator with USD 232 in De Soto, Kan.

Meagan Strang, BSN ’12, is a registered nurse in Bethlehem, Pa.

Tressa Wright, EdD ’11, is assistant principal for Bernard Campbell Middle School in Lee’s Summit, Mo. A teacher at the school since 1999, Wright has taught mathematics and at-risk courses. She previously taught mathematics at Raytown South Middle School and Liberty High School in Mountain View, Mo.
