On November 11, the Primary Text program held its first Swogger Literary Salon with
“ ‘Thou Mayest’: John Steinbeck’s Life, Work, and the Use of Hebrew in East of Eden.” Dr. Nicholaus Pumphrey, associate professor of religious studies, led a discussion on Steinbeck’s life and work, with a special focus on the role of religion in his acclaimed novel.
The Literary Salons are made possible by a gift from the Swogger Foundation, established by Glenn Swogger Sr., a 1915 Baker graduate. The gift was presented by his son Dr. Glenn Swogger Jr. and granddaughters Jennifer Doucet and Anne-Liesl Swogger.
